The Correlation between Packed Red Cell Transfusion and Increases in Hemoglobin Levels in Anemic Patients with Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a dangerous chronic disease often referred to as a silent killer and causes various complications, including impaired kidney function. Kidney dysfunction in patients with diabetes mellitus frequently triggers anemia, which increases the risk of morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between Packed Red Cell (PRC) transfusion and increases in hemoglobin levels in anemic patients with diabetes mellitus. This study employed an analytical observational design with a quantitative approach. The researchers conducted univariate and bivariate analyses on 40 respondents who simultaneously constituted the study population and sample. The researchers processed the data using Microsoft Excel and IBM SPSS version 27 and presented the results in the form of frequency distribution tables. The analysis results showed a correlation coefficient (r) value of 0.400, which was greater than the r-table value, indicating a relationship between PRC transfusion and increased hemoglobin levels. This study concludes that Packed Red Cell (PRC) transfusion is associated with increased hemoglobin levels in patients with diabetes mellitus accompanied by anemia.
