Abstract

Indonesia is a country known for its diverse cultural characteristics that are not limited by religion. The election of a leader who refers to a particular faith-based group creates a sense of pride and solidarity within a community. However, this positive impact is quite exclusive and does not include other communities or groups that are not based on a particular religion, which is one of the factors in the emergence of discrimination and conflict between different religious groups and the emergence of anti-religious feelings among minority groups. This research uses a case study method with Source Analysis related to the 2019 Presidential Election in Indonesia. The analyzed data will be interpreted to determine the role of religion in executive elections. Indonesian society has a demographic majority of Muslims, and many parties use this as a tool to achieve their success by portraying their piety ahead of elections. Understanding of inter-religious tolerance needs to be improved through formal and informal education, including social media and public campaigns with an understanding of the importance of maintaining inter-religious harmony and that the selection of leaders should be done wisely and not be influenced by religious or persuasive factors.
