Abstract

Problems that occur in Indonesia’s sugar production are the yield of sugar cane has not reached target and consumption of sugar which is increasing and the production obtained is decreasing. This study aims to determine the factors and solutions concern national sugar production. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, and data taken from various literature. Results of this study are Indonesia trying to achieve self-sufficiency in sugar seen from the increased growth sugar production and harmony between farmers and government. However, in the production there are obstacles including technological machines so efficiency of machine processing sugar lacking. Quality of the sap obtained affects yield of the resulting sugarcane. The size of yield will affect value and selling price produced. Factors that affect quality of sugarcane yields are sugarcane productivity, resistance to pests and diseases, age and ability to grow, climate, land area, varieties, cropping patterns and so on. Sugarcane varieties are needed to increase sugarcane productivity. Increasing self-sufficiency in sugar can be done by expanding area of sugar cane plantations, using superior varieties with high yields, increasing soil fertility by using organic fertilizers, increasing competitiveness by improving system from planting (on farm) to sugar production.
