Abstract

Kampung Cina in Padang City is the oldest Chinese settlement in West Sumatra, with the See Hin Kiong Temple serving as its cultural and religious center. This study aims to analyze the symbolic meanings found in the statues at the Chinese Temple in Kampung Cina, Padang City, through the semiotic approach introduced by Roland Barthes. As visual media, statues function not only as aesthetic elements but also as means of conveying cultural messages, beliefs, and religious values of the Chinese community. The research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were obtained through direct observation, visual documentation, and literature review related to semiotics and Chinese culture. Data analysis was conducted by examining the visual signs of the statues based on the elements of signifier and signified to reveal the denotative and connotative meanings contained within them. The results indicate that the statues at the Chinese Temple in Kampung Cina, Padang City represent values of faith, life philosophy, and symbols of protection, prosperity, and harmony. These meanings reflect the acculturation of Chinese culture with the surrounding local social environment.
