Simbolisme Identitas Diaspora pada Film “The Farewell” Karya Lulu Wang Kajian Semiotika

This study examines the symbolism of diaspora identity in Lulu Wang’s film The Farewell using Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach, which focuses on the levels of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth. The symbolism of diaspora identity is also analyzed through Stuart Hall’s cultural identity framework, particularly the concepts of being and becoming. The study aims to analyze how visual, narrative, and cultural symbolism in the film represents the meaning of diaspora identity experienced by the main character. The research method used is a qualitative descriptive method with data collection techniques involving screenshots of scenes from the film. The symbolism of diaspora identity is found through two concepts: identity as being and identity as becoming. The research findings show that Billi's diaspora identity is represented through symbolism such as code switching, tai chi practice, and the giving of angpau, which reflect ongoing identity negotiation. Additionally, there are internal conflicts in the form of moral dilemmas and external conflicts arising in interactions with family. A total of 14 data points were found in this study, with the most dominant finding being that Billi's identity does not lean toward one Chinese or American cultural identity.
