Islam and Local Wisdom: A Literature Review on the Relationship Between Culture and Religion in Indonesia

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between Islam and local wisdom, focusing on how both interact and influence each other within the Indonesian context. Islam, as a universal religion, demonstrates remarkable adaptability to various local cultures, making it an integral part of social and cultural life. Local wisdom, which encompasses values and traditional practices, often serves as a medium to introduce and strengthen Islamic values. However, there is debate over the balance between preserving local wisdom and upholding the purity of Islamic law. This research employs the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method to analyze relevant literature on this relationship. The findings reveal that Islam can adapt to local cultures without compromising its core teachings, creating harmony in various traditions and social practices. On the other hand, challenges arise in maintaining a balance between cultural assimilation and the implementation of Islamic teachings. This study also highlights the strategic role of Islam and local wisdom in preserving cultural identity amid globalization, emphasizing the need for holistic studies to address future social, cultural, and spiritual challenges.
