The Effect of Blood Storage on Quality of Hemoglobin Levels Whole Blood Components at UTDRS Buton

Hemoglobin is a molecule in red blood cells that plays a crucial role in transporting oxygen throughout the body. Whole blood refers to blood taken directly from a donor, mixed with an anticoagulant, and stored in blood bags. To maintain its quality, whole blood is stored with citrate-phosphate-dextrose-adenine (CPDA) anticoagulant at temperatures between 2 and 6°C, with a shelf life of 35 days. This study aims to determine the effect of blood storage on hemoglobin levels in whole blood components before and after one week of storage at the Blood Transfusion Unit of Buton Hospital (UTDRS Buton). This research uses a quantitative method with a descriptive correlational approach. The study population consists of 30 whole blood bags, selected using total sampling. The collected data were analyzed using bivariate and univariate analysis. Pearson's correlation test was used to analyze the relationship between the two variables, with the results showing a significance value of 0.808, which is greater than 0.05. This indicates that there is no significant relationship between the volume of blood storage and hemoglobin levels in whole blood components. The conclusion of this study is that no negative effect on hemoglobin levels in whole blood components was found during storage at UTDRS Buton, indicating that blood storage does not significantly affect hemoglobin levels.
